“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
If verse 28 in the previous blog is the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, always ready to rescue us when we are overwhelmed, then verse 29 is the fence at the top of the cliff that we need to build into our lives so we never fall over the cliff desperate or in an exhausted heap again.
The Greek word for rest this time is Anapausis which according to Strong’s Concordance means
1. Intermission, cessation of any motion, business or labour.
2. The word denotes a temporary rest e.g. of soldiers
It only occurs 5x in the New Testament, and here are the other verses.
Mathew 12:43 and Luke 11:24 ‘When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it’
Revelation 4:8 ‘Each of the four living creatures … never stop (never rest) saying “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.” ‘
Revelation 14:11 ‘And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image …’
There is no intermission for these 3 groups of beings
-Nowhere for the evil spirit to pause for a moment.
-No pauses in the praise around the throne of God in heaven.
-No relief for the tormented in hell.
But WE ARE given intermissions from God when we walk in His ways. We can learn how to pause effectively without feeling guilty.
It is important to note that in verse 29 there are 2 conditions that take more work than the glorious ‘come’ of verse 28.
Take my yoke – say yes to God for what you look like, your personality, your family, your strengths and your weaknesses.
There are things we cannot change completely although of course we can work on them to a certain extent. Freedom comes when we say ‘yes I will walk my life with determination and faith in the hand you have dealt out to me’ instead of comparing ourselves with others and feeling either proud or jealous in response.
And learn of me – wow, that is when we spend time studying the Bible to learn about God’s attributes, how God works, and how we should be like Him. Or when we spend time beholding His Presence as we already discussed in 2Corinthians 3:18.
And you will FIND rest for your souls.
– in verse 28 Rest was Given.
– in verse 29 Rest is Found.
You usually find something because you are consciously looking for it or putting some effort into searching for it.
I hope you will be so over busy in your life that you will hunger for intermissions of rest where you will build sustainability and resilience into your life.
