Jesus gives Rest

Mathew 11:28  Come to me all ye who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Come to Me – don’t you just love that call from God’s heart

. It is not stand in line, give rest
wait your turn,
prove your worth,
hang on while I do something else more important,
be with you in a moment,
or your call is important to me so I will get back to you.

‘Come’ –  shows God’s open arms and open heart towards me.

tiredAll you who are heavy laden We carry so many things. From busy schedules to stress and unrealistic expectations, a lack of control of our own lives or the huge range of relationship difficulties. Emotional or physical abuse, addictions and broken hearts. Resentments and bitterness are cruel masters and drain our resources, a low self-esteem means life happens uphill.

But God does not need to have different management plans, as there is one solution that can open the door to a wide range of healing capabilities.

And I will give you rest!
Peace at last, an end of striving. It is all under the control of the One who put each star in place.

And I’d like to look at the words Give and Rest.

‘Give’ is a bonus. And every human being is partial to any amount of ‘give’. No requirements after ‘Come’, no strings, no costs.

This word rest is the Greek word Anapauo, which according to Strong’s Concordance means:- refresh,
2. a calm and patient expectation.
I think it is like the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. Always there and always available when we are worn down and exhausted.

The word Anapauo occurs 12x in the New Testament, and here are 3 other verses to get the feel of it:-

Mark 6:31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them,
“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.

Mark 14:41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come.
Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Revelation 14:13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on”
“Yes” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labours, for their deeds will follow them”.

But that is only half the story, wait for a different word for rest in the next verse in my next blog!
